Giclee Prints

End of Summer
To create the original Japanese woodblock reduction print (edition size: 30), Ireland started with a roll-up for the background color. He then created subsequent layers of color by carving out what wasn't wanted for each color, printing, then carving away more of the woodblock for the next color. The final run through the press applied the darkest color. End of Summer was printed on a high-fiber, hand-made paper and the giclee reproduction picks up the texture of that paper perfectly, rendering the original in faithful detail.

Journey
Fascinated by the movement of water, Michael Ireland did a number of paintings from various points of view. In Journey he tightened his focus on the movement itself. The title reveals Ireland's use of water as a metaphor for life. We are always in motion, heading inevitably back to a sea somewhere. The piece was returned to Ireland's estate by the owner shortly before she died from cancer.

Known for his layered watercolors, Let's Meet Back Here in an Hour took a month to paint as Ireland lay down wash after wash of color. The piece caught the eye of Jimmy Buffett's lighting director, who bought it and then hired Ireland to work on Buffett's set design until Ireland's death in 2000. This giclee is the same size as the original and reproduces the intricate color Ireland applied. The image is of Seattle's famed Pike Street Market as it was in 1978. The VW van in the picture was Ireland's.

Plein Air
Plein air is the term for painting in oil on location. The artist must work fast to capture his image in light that is constantly changing as the sun makes its progress across the sky. Michael Ireland painted Plein Air on a summer evening in northern California, where heat has bleached the life from the meadows and a lowering sun leaves blue shadows in its wake.

"Plein Air"
9"h x 12"w, printed on canvas with protective coating.

Samish Island captures the dazzling color of the last rays of a high summer sun on the salt marshes and a canal between La Conner, WA, and Samish Island on the Puget Sound. This piece marked Michael Ireland's evolution into a jewel-toned palette in his oil paintings.

"Samish Island"
6.5"h x 12.5"w, printed on canvas with protective coating

In this piece, Michael Ireland was captivated by the mist forming in the backwaters of Sooke Harbor, located on the outside of Vancouver Island, on an autumn day when the sun was warm, but the coming night was cool. The giclee reveals his use of texture on the canvas to give the image depth.

The term "giclee" is French for "spraying of ink," which precisely describes the print process used by Pearl Publishing in Portland, Oregon. Ireland Studio prints are created with an Iris ink jet printer that sprays millions of tiny droplets of ink onto an absorbent surface, producing an archival fine art piece without a digital signature.

Paper or canvas is mounted onto a drum that rotates as it's sprayed with 4,000,000 tiny droplets per second by four calibrated color streams of archival ink (estimated life of 60 years). This production method produces 512 chromatic changes, with over 3,000,000 possible colors of saturated, nontoxic, water-based ink. The result is a continuous print with the precise hue, value, and density of the original.

In order to be as faithful as possible to the original art, the reproductions are one-to-one unless otherwise noted, with the watercolors printed on high quality watercolor paper (Arches), and the oils printed on canvas and coated to give them all the 'punch' of the original. Editions are limited to 500, with each print numbered. New images will be released every year. Satisfaction is guaranteed.
